wood for good
Wood Moves is an independent design collective that crafts original handmade home goods and donates 5% of all sales to fight poverty.
We’re called Wood Moves primarily because wood moves. Even centuries after a tree falls it continues to interact with its surroundings, expanding and contracting as the seasons change. We are, frankly, inspired by our material of choice and its inability to sit still, inspired by its opposition to stagnancy. We also think of moving as changing things for the better.
As an independent design collective, everything we produce is designed by us and meticulously shaped by human hands. Our work is built to last. We make pieces to be cherished, put to use, and handed down. And wood lasts. For decades. Even so, over 12 million tons of furniture and home goods are thrown out each year. Over 80% ends up in landfills. We believe that solid, well-made goods are an answer to fast furniture. A return to artistry and craft through a more humane and equitable marketplace. A return to the days before faceless, multinational corporations started pushing their particle board on the masses.
A primary tenet of our mission is to give back, which is why 5% of all sales are donated to GiveDirectly. Not 5% of profits. 5% of sales. We choose GiveDirectly because their approach follows the research. And that research shows that if you want to improve people's lives who live in poverty, give them money, and trust that they know how best to use it. GiveDirectly has shown true dedication to ending poverty around the world, and we want to do what we can to support their efforts.
Wood Moves works to build a better world for those in need today, reduce landfill waste tomorrow, and create fine objects that can enrich living spaces for decades to come.
